My 10-year-old daughter wants to ride with me and her older brother, but her mountain bike is heavy. I help her along as safely as possible, but I think a racing bike would encourage her. She could be a Nicole Cooke in the making.

Without spending a fortune, were can I get a decent road bike for a 10-year-old, 1.4 metres tall?

Martin Kittle, North Wales

Unfortunately, many children’s bikes are heavy and therefore hard work.

For a well-designed road bike for ages 10 and upwards, check out Islabikes Luath, with either 26-inch or 700c wheels and adjustable reach brake levers, from £299 (islabikes.co.uk, tel 01746 710835).
