FROM ZERO TO GIRO: ASTANA'S BAFFLING RETURN
Confused? You soon will be, with the Giro and Vuelta organisers dumbfounding everyone with their increasingly bizarre selection criteria this week. It's bad news for the Brits, with Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins denied an end-of-season fling in the Spanish race, after a spat between team High Road and the organisers.
Team boss Bob Stapleton had made a pre-emptive strike days before the official
announcement, saying that High Road didn't want to ride even if they were asked to. Apparently the organisers "lacked commitment".
Vuelta organiser Victor Cordero was having none of it, and insisted that High Road hadn't turned him down, it was his decision that the American team were not riding. Apparently the team had "motivational problems," according to Cordero.
High Road also had problems getting into the Giro, and were initially rejected along with Astana. Now, in a complete U-turn, both teams will be on the start line for the Italian race, which begins next weekend.
We look ahead to the Giro in this week's issue of Cycling Weekly, with our tips for the race overall, stage list and the latest news, comment and analysis of the event.
