I noticed on a post I had about shifters I got offered a set someone had for sale but I decided to go for differant ones in the end. Then Sly broke his crank(ouch) and again one was offered as a replacement. I know there is ebay, shops,ad trader etc but is it worth having a section where members can post "looking for" questions where we can either turn a pound, save a pound or just move on stuff we have filling the shed whether it's for a 175mm crank, one clipless pedal that you need or even a Mapei jersey in 2xl from 1999! So what's the opinion out there?

I'm not against it. (mild praise)
Don't want this turning into e-bay though.

I suggest that you say what you are looking for, not what you have. That should avoid any ebay type section.

I'm for it. I'd rather my stuff go to the guys here than have the hassle (not to mention fees!) of listing on eBay.
I'd also much rather give my money to the guys here than some complete stranger.

I'm not sure about a buying and selling section. But a kind of recycling section where you can just pass things on would be great. A lot of local papers do that. Isn't there a rule about not being allowed to sell or advertise via the forum???

Well it's sort of covered, broadly speaking, in the T&Cs;
Quote:
6.2... You agree that you will not use the Web Site or any of the Web Site Services as follows: ... for any purposes connected to any business...
'Business' being commercial activity, ergo the exchange of goods and/or services for payment.

Is the selling of pesonnel goods not outwith the terms of business since the Inland Revenue don't count it as earnings unless profit is being made. Looks like a grey area here so can we get an official yes or no?

To say yes increases the greyness, and the semantic arguments. So, to be definitive, no.

Of course, you can always appeal to the editor, it's his forum.
I know we had a 'Sales/Wanted' area on the Amateur Photographer forum for a while, alas it was binned as it was abused by drive-by posters promoting eBay auctions, commercial spammers, and others who punted kit which proved not to be as advertised, all of which tarnished the AP brand and was more trouble than it was worth.

That's why I thought it would work if it is purely a wanted section where adverts or people selling would be easy to spot. Almost a nuts and bolts section rather than entire bikes since at times I have needed something cheap and silly but just can't find.

I think it's a good idea. Surely people posting their "wants" is not a problem? People can then PM them for their email address and they can conduct any transactions out of the bounds of the forum if they so wish?

Hahahahaha!
Sorry, we don't even have one of those on the photography forums.
To be frank, we're lucky to have a forum, let alone any 'enhancements'... Anyone who's worked within a large corporate environment will know just how difficult it is to have anything other than the 'norm' implemented, and IPC is no different.
There is word however (from rumour control) that new forum software is forthcoming, but in my experience I wouldn't hold your breath, or hope for anything more than a new paint job.

Do they run a magazine with paid-for classified ads?

But there is a place on that other forum (I'm guessing you are talking about the Amateur Photographer forum,) where it's members can post pictures as long as they already hosted somewhere else.

You can do that here, just have in the post. Having the gallery functionality would just make life a little easier for people to put photos onto the forum site and it would be done in a standard way so others can help those unsure as opposed to saying talk to your ISP about hosting space or use flickr, deviant or some other image hosting site.
It falls into the if you don't ask you don't get categorie of life, I asked, I didn't get so I'll still host images for people assuming I'm about.

There is a gallery of reader/user photos in the Gallery section here but it hasn't been updated for a while.
I've started a new one, and anyone is free to email me their photos and I'll post the best ones in there. The new gallery is here!
