seen a lot of the big names -which is a big draw. But also saw this week a "Boardman" frame which looked quite nice, and have also seen a few bikes about with just "Specialized" written on their frames. I feel so ignorant - what would good money buy??????????

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the major brands these days, you don't here of any that fall to bits. It's down to finding a frame whose price and weight you like and seeing if the equipment the manufacturer specs is what you want. It is very rare that you hear of anyone regretting their choice, unless they have buggered up on the sizing or type of machine for the intended purpose.
Confusing, but great fun going through the options.

Specialized is one of the worlds largest bike brands, Scouser. You could google it for a starter. Boardman bikes are sold at Halfords.

There is a Specialized Concept Store in Chester if you're ever over this way, Scouser. Like a Porsche showroom, but with bikes. They primarily have 3 road bike ranges: Allez (alu); Roubaix (designed for Sportives and distance riding); Tarmac (higher end racing machines).
It's a good shop, next door to the Bike Factory. Leaev your wallet at home if you visit it for browsing, cos you'll be spending money on things you never knew you needed!

Gee it gets more confusing! Halfords I'd generally consider giving a wide berth to. I want the best, at the best price - and someone must know how to get hold of that without lining the pocket of some middleman, surely? Then I'll be whizzing along Llandudno Prom.
Incidentally, one of the Conwy Council guys recently told me to get my Quinn Bike done up and I'd have one of the best on the road - sure he was being nice - he just hated carbon frames. Told me of some "finishings" place in L'pool to go to, to get the frame done up.

I have heard those halfords boardman bikes are pretty good. Don't know from experience though. And the Specialized Tarmac or Roubaix are used in a few pro teams and have plenty of models in the range if the spec isn't good enough for you (up to the S Works setup, if you want to pay car money for a bike!)

So, like if you had a thousand pound to blow - give or take a bit, what would you buy?

I really don't know enough about the bikes on offer at that price. I know the Spesh range, cos I have one and the shop is near home, but I don't have a wide enough range of opinion to be of any use to you, I'm afraid.
I think I'd beg, steal or borrow another £395 and get a Trek Madone 4.5. Seems to get great reviews. Stop it now - you're making me want a new bike!

Well I spent slightly less than that on a Bianchi Via Nirone Veloce Compact, mainly because I fancied not going Shimano and a compact seams sensible, a couple of people made mutterings on here about the fram and my LBS always has a window full of Bianchi to drool over.
I guess that doesn't help?
