Hi everyone. This is my first time on this forum and i'm fairly new to cycling too (about six months). I've just completed my first organised ride, Manchester to Blackpool approx 60 miles. The problem is that each time i go out on my bike it takes me around 8 to 10 miles to get my legs going properly, not so much stiff just aching! I usually go out about 3 to 4 times a week for between 45 mins & 3 hours and usually have a least one days rest. Any ideas or advice please.I'm 54.

Hi there. I usually find that my legs are not fully warmed up for about 6 - 10 miles. If I hit a sharp hill in the first few miles my legs ache like hell!
Sometimes I will use the Rollers to have a quick spin first, or even use my wife's stepper exerciser thingy, just to get my legs going a bit.
I think it's normal to take a few miles to warm up - how about recovery? Do you get the same aching legs afterwards?

Hi Sly thanks for that thought it was just me being an old so & so. Yes my legs ache in recovery but no to badly and it's usually the day after. It can last all day or even longer depending on how long i've been out.

My best times over 40+ miles are always when I spin nice and easy gears for 7 or 8 miles, I never load the legs even up hill. When cycling with friends you get dropped like a stone but you soon catch up and can pummel them from halfway onwards. A good warm up is the key,I even prefer 3/4 leggings to shorts if under 16 degrees C, It keeps the muscles warm and the especially the knees which is really important.

I get the same problem, it seemed to come on after the age of 45 so there's probably not much you can do to stop it. Basically I suffer up the first hill until things get warmed up, then I forget it happened - until next time. The more weekly miles I ride the less it bothers me, but I'm certainly not as energetic as I was 15 years ago. Then riding was all fun, now I have to work at it.
