I can see you get more for your money than the £2 you might have to pay to enter a reliability trial, or the £10 for a big CTC event. I suppose it depends what you're looking for, after all the CTC is fairly inclusive.

If people want sportives, then good luck to them, I just wonder why they've become so popular when the CTC and others have been doing similar things for a while. Is it simply that sportives have become more organised (politically) and BC is also getting in on the act?

I know that an event can encourage you to do a ride you might not otherwise have considered.

Like you say, all cycling is good.
