The framebuilder reckons he uses a steel wedge. Personally I bought a couple of automotive bearing pullers from the fleamarket. 3 hooked arms hinged onto what is effectively a large nut. There's a long, hardened bolt through the middle. Get 2 of different lengths but make sure the arms are interchangeable, that way you can knock up a hybrid to get a good grip on the chainring spider.
