Avoid the Inverness to Fort William road, it can be very busy and the traffic is fast!. Better to go slightly south and take the Newtonmore to Spean Bridge road(A86) Thats where Monarch of the glen was filmed. Better bet is to stick to the west coast for cycling,Fort William, Glen Shiel,Loch Carron,Torridon to Ullapool. Great roads, quiet, big scenery, even a hop over to Skye is nice.
