Cycling and Bad moods
|
|
I (and those around me!) have noticed that after certain rides I can descend into a really foul mood. It doesnt happen after every ride and doesnt seem to be depend on intensity, so Im ruling general tiredness out...but sessions on the turbo seem to be worse. For example, on sunday I did quite a hard turbo session feeling fine and in a good mood, even after the ride but about an hour later I had descended into a shocking mood and though I recognised it myself and knew there was no reason to be miserable I couldnt help myself. Neeedless to say it goes down a treat with the other half. Does anyone know of a scientific reason or am I just getting grumpy with age??

Cycling should release good endorphines and make you high.
Maybe after the good endorphines have subsided you are feeling a withdrawl, and through mental fragility you allow yourself to get moody and grumpy.
Are you sure its the cycling and not another external factor that is making you moody.
Is it your menstrual cycle that is playing you up.
Give your turbo away and get out in the fresh air, that will make you happy. Cycling in the rain is more enjoyable than riding on a turbo.

Thanks for the reply and advice, I dont think its my menstrual cycle due to being a thirty one year old male!! (my fault-I should have stated that!) With regards it being an external factor, I dont think it is that. I gave Sunday as an example because I had specifically had a good day up until that point and no reason to be in a bad mood (in fact-without going into details had good news so should have been fine and dandy). I agree with you about getting out into the fresh air but I was at work!! I can arrange to get an hour or so in the gym though on a sunday but am not allowed to leave site so turbo is the only option! so I was thinking on the lines of a chemical imbalance or something due to excessive sweating(?) I may have discovered a new illness...victor meldrew syndrome!! Cheers

I find it's my wife who descends into a foul mood when I return from rides. Something about children.... on her own.... cooking dinner... housework... I can't remember exactly as I'm usually crashing on to the sofa to watch TV with a beer at that point!!

Married the same person too!!! Best solution is to cycle on multi day trips, one lecture at the end of the week lasts less time than the 7 dailly rants.

Elnino, what were you thinking about whilst on the turbo?
It's sometimes easy to descend into a black mood without knowing it because you either are not focussed on something positive or are not distracted by, say the road conditions whilst on an outdoors ride.
I've experienced unpleasant feelings after turbo rides perhaps because of boredom or music that I at first liked but eventually it wore me down.
Turbo training definitely needs distraction that is well thought out or rides of very limited duration. Less than 30 minutes.

The fabled "endorphin rush" is a myth ! I've played all sorts of sports for 40 years and never had one, I've been in some bad moods though !

I am a grumpy sod whenever I am hungry. Maybe it's to do with blood sugar levels. Mrs B says I am a grumpy sod whenever I am...awake.

I get that, I often hear the words "Fergie needs a cookie" when I'm launching some poor defenceless chainsaw that wont work across a garden!!

Thanks for the replies, With regards to what I was thinking...at the time I was on the turbo there was a lovely looking girl in her early twenties occupying the treadmill in the works gym in front of me so I guess I was thinking positively...perhaps a little too positively!! I always try to get into the right frame of mind and have my MP3 stocked up with Loenard Cohen, Radiohead and The Smiths. I just wondered if there was a scientific reason...I guess maybe I am just miserable!! I will have to confront my own grumpiness now. Something else to worry about!!! Cheers

I think that this is maybe the explanantion. Thatmanagain gets really cross and grumpy when his blood sugar gets low. So much so that he loses his ability to think rationally or do anything about it. "I'm not buying that/eating here/waiting any longer " etc etc..
It's quite alarming when we're out on our bikes and he gets like this, especially when we're cycle touring. But once I've managed to force some food down him he's back to his normal affable "you sank the car? Don't worry about it, doll" self.
His father was diabetic so I think some people are more prone to this effect than others.

Gets my vote, miserable bunch of musicians, I know they say being rich, talented, popular and successful wont make you happy but I would love to try!! Change the music, only happy stuff from now on!

Genesis... and
Prog rock is fine for touring when you can roam in as many directions as the music goes. Not for training!

Yeah, definitely belongs to the same camp as Bruce Springstein - 'music to slit your wrists to!'

The Boss performs music to riot to, at times.

"Now for the real test ... what do you think of Humble Pie"
Good band, better as individuals, "30 days" is a classic, covered by Mr Big in the early 90s, I thought everyone owns "Frampton comes alive" but wont admit it, great album. Great music when lazin on a sunday afternoon.
