Hello everyone - new to this forum, and fairly new to road biking (although have ridden a bike most days of my life, I reckon, for transport).
I was wondering if any of you could help me with info re "tapering", or the period before an event. I've signed up for the Dragon Ride in mid-june, going to attempt the 75 mile, not 115m, distance. Going to be my first cycling event and I really really want to finish, and do ok.
As a preparation, I've also signed up for the Victor Ludorum at Highclere the weekend before. The latter event is 70k, 120k, or 200k.
My question is this. In order to do my best at the Dragon, should I: (a) do the short 75k at Highclere, at a moderate pace; (b) the same, but do it as fast as I can - treat it as a time trial; or (c) do the 120k (essentially the same as the Dragon) at moderate pace.
I don't want to compromise my performance the week after.
If it depends on my training regime/fitness levels I'll be happy to set those out (basically: skeletal/modest) but don't want to bore everyone with too much detail.

If your not used to those length rides and your training has not been planned id do the short one, complete it and build some confidence. If you having been putting some miles in it will be grit and determination that gets you through and feeling confident will help!

Or heed Dr Hutch's latest advice and avoid doing anything that might end up going pear-shaped and destroying your confidence!

Fred Whitton last Sunday, Etape Du Dales this Sunday, get em in while you have the chance, we will all soon be dead.
On the Saturday have a gentle spin or a rest. Cut drinking down on the Saturday to just one bottle of wine and / or a few steady pints. Stay off the shorts. Have a glass of water before bed. Enjoy and good luck.

thanks guys - appreciate the time you take to respond
I was going to abstain from booze the day before, but pleased to hear that a bottle of wine is good
actually it would destroy me - I'm a small woman
I will take the advice as meaning that if I'm good for 70 or so miles (BIG if), I could in theory do 70 miles one weekend and the same again the following weekend with no impact on performance.

Apparantly sex before a ride helps endurance. More so in women than men. This fact has not proven to be a viable reason for me yet but keep asking
