Energy gels
      #22607 - 28/05/2008 20:21

I'm attempting the Dragon ride in a few weeks time and need some advice. I've started using energy gels on some of my training rides (high 5) but aren't sure how often I should be taking one. I guess the idea is to prevent the dreaded bonk but does that mean one every couple of hours or more often. I know weight, fitness etc are all factors, it's just a rough idea I'm after. I'm also eating the odd nutrigrain bar, bannana and fig buscuits etc along the way......sorry if it's a daft question.

The box says something like 1 every 20 mins, but at that rate you'd be better off hanging up your bike and taking the car everywhere!

I'm not sure there's a right or wrong answer here - everyone must have different requirements, and when combining with other food and drink it becomes even more complicated to say how many you'll need.

I just take a few with me and try to remember to have one every 45 mins or so, alongside the usual drinks and the odd flapjack type thing.

Because of the cost of energy gels at about a quid a go, I'd take a pocketful of fig rolls and a couple of gels for emergencies. I find on a Sunday three hour ride, a big bowl of porridge and honey gets me round fine, but I eat four fig rolls as precaution. I've not yet needed the gel. A bottle of energy drink as well with a bag of powder to add to bottles when you fill them up works well.
