Beginners Question
      #26635 - 10/07/2008 22:33

Hi there. I'm a new member to this forum and fairly new to cycling. I did do quite a lot of cycling about 4-5 years ago but am now totally unfit and looking to get back on the bike (I guess I've been drawn in by The Tour de France!!)

My question is one about circulation or more specifically pins and needles!! I get pins and needles in my willy and between my willy and my bum!! (Good job you can ask these questions anonymously!!) I find I have to stand up on the peddles after about 5 miles to releive it. Sometimes when I get home and get off the bike it really kicks in!! What could this be - too big saddle? Saddle wrongly positioned? Saddle to high? or low?

I also get pins and needles in my feet too and they almost feel numb. MY SPD's are the right size for me and they are quite hard inside - should I put a soft insole in?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Your saddle may be nose high, drop it so it is level or slightly nose down, it may be a soft saddle saddle which can cause problems. As for the feet, your shoes may be over tightened even if they are the right size. Also the fact that you have to stand up for so long may be affecting your feet, I would guess if you get the saddle right the feet should improve!

Did this happen 4-5 years ago as well, or is it new?

Checking your saddle height/position could be important.

I have a vague recollection that this might have affected me when I first got back into cycling as an "adult", but it disappeared after a few weeks.

Your weight should be carried on the "Sit Bones" in the buttocks, that's what the wide rear end of the saddle's for. If you carry weight between your 4rse & wedding tackle you cut off the blood flow and can also damage the nerves, with nasty consequences for your love life. Try experimenting with the fore/aft adjustment of the saddle and make sure the height is correct.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I will check the saddle position - and yes it did happen when I was cycling before - cant remember what happend then tho'!!

What do you mean by shoes being overtightened even if they are the right size?

Cheers

I think they mean that you may be doing up the laces or velcro straps on your shoes too tight.

I know that happens to me if I do up mine too tight.

K

P.S. But my saddle must be right as I have no probs with my cock!

That's exactly what I meant. If you tighten laces or velcro too much it restricts blood flow, remember your feet are not really moving on the bike!!

Do you think a different saddle might be better for you?

Might well be actually - my saddle is quite big and bulky. Any recommendations?

I'm sure everyone will have their own recommendation, but I use Selle Italia XO Transam Special Edition saddles. These have a cut out in the centre, are v comortable and don't break the bank.

Selle Italia C2 gel flow with the cut out as well (but sly tends to follow the penguin flock!!) Nice finished leather saddle, light weight and very comfortable.
I did hear that whatever saddle you use after 1000 miles it is the best saddle in the world...in your opinion!
