Hi all, i have been back on the bike for about 6 weeks now after a long lay off, i have been averaging approx 100 miles per week and have caught a head cold (coughing, sore throat) and feeling tired on the bike. Do i have a weeks rest, or carry on with steady rides? i don't want to stay off the bike and loose the form i have built up. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Kind regards, Andrew.

If it is a bad cold then rest, apart from feeling rough you could be putting extra strain on your heart and muscles in general. If you want to keep training knock off the really hard stuff for a few days, you won't lose form in that time and will recover quicker from the cold thus getting you back training at full tilt earlier. Never mask the illness or any illness with painkillers since you will damage yourself without knowing. You are likely to dehydrate if cycling with a cold also since you will be running a high temperature also. Take a 3 days off, watch le tour and drink that orange juice.

The rule of thumb is if the illness is above the neck keep riding, if below, rest. So a head cold is okay to carry on with, a chesty cold isn't. But listen to your body - it'll soon let you know if you're doing something it doesn't like.

Personaly I couldn't cycle with a head cold incase it goes down to my chest .I.would have a couple of days off (especialy in this weather at the mo. ) a good three fingers of a hot toddy (that sounds quite smutty) it's a whisky based so called cold cure ! after drinking it you just don't give a damn , and settle down and watch the tour !!

Start taking echinacea and vit C supplements if you're finding colds more frequent. I found that when I started doing a lot of cycling I was getting more colds despite being fitter than ever before. Have hardly had a sniffle since taking the echinacea. I get mine from Healthspan.

it goes without saying that everyone reacts differently (but i appear to have said it anyway )
usually i take a couple of days off the bike then get back out for a very short run, under 5-10miles. i attack from the front door and push myself as much as possible, cold is usually gone by next day, if not, do the same ride the next day too.
works a treat for me...hope you find something that works for you.

I was recommended zinc tablets a couple of years ago. As soon as you feel the onset of a cold start taking them. It helps the cold pass quicker. It mightn't work the same for everybody, but it certainly helps me.

If I *can* ride I do. If I can't it's half a bottle of whisky & hibernate until the hangover's gone, then ride!

If I stopped when I got a cold, I'd never get out. My (small) kids catch every disease going and then I catch it from them.
If it feels really bad don't go out, otherwise ride, you'll feel better afterwards, probably. You can tell on a ride if you have something nasty, you slow down and your legs ache quicker, in that case cut it short and wait to the next time.

Since you have been working out really hard on the bike you should give yourself three days off the bike so your body recovers quickly, otherwise you might cause some damage to your lungs, muscles and tendons since your immune system is low. Being three days off the bike won't make you lose the endurance you've acquired during these past six weeks.
Good luck and get better soon!

If you treat a cold it should last seven days , if you leave it and let it run its course it should last a week!!!!
