I can get my left crank off easily enough, but the other side is not playing. The tool is threading in, but when you start the extraction it just pulls out after a while.
a) is it worth trying a different tool (I have the one which does NOT have a handle built in)?
b) if the thread's gone, what are the options for removing the crank??
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you stripped the threads, I did that with a crank once and had to put the extractor tool on to put some tension on the crank but not enough to pull it out of the threads left, place a spanner behind the crank, over the square taper shaft(I assume that's what you have) and gently lever it off, watch you don't mark the frame, if you can place another thin spanner in to lever against all well and good, you can also pour boiling water on the crank to make it expand then continue levering quickly before it cools but be careful, aluminium alloy absorbs heat fast....burny fingers

No, they are both the same.

I was told the engineers solution was patience. Penetrating oil or diesel poured on the threads and left. Slight heat and cooling using an ice pack could expand one part and shrink the other. If you get a slight movement don't just try to get it out but small turns in both directions until it eases gradually increasing the range.

But there are no threads to free in this case - the crank is a push fit on the taper.

Someone I just spoke to said he bashed at some stuck cranks years ago and nothing he tried could get them off. Then one winter, it just came off in his hand without so much as a tap. I don't have that long to wait though.
If I get really desperate I know from experience that I can simply overtighten the bolt until it cracks and comes off by itself! Not the cheapest option though...

take the bottom bracket cup off on the non drive side, put as many washers as you can get on the tapered part of the non drive side spindle plus a couple more, having used something softer to protect the bb shell first then put the crank bolt and tighten the non drive side crank bolt, this will pull the bottom bracket through the bottom bracket shell and will therefore eventually pull the chainset off. remember to protect both sides of the bb shell, its just a matter of using the right number of washers or similar.

The framebuilder reckons he uses a steel wedge. Personally I bought a couple of automotive bearing pullers from the fleamarket. 3 hooked arms hinged onto what is effectively a large nut. There's a long, hardened bolt through the middle. Get 2 of different lengths but make sure the arms are interchangeable, that way you can knock up a hybrid to get a good grip on the chainring spider.

I've not tried it but someone told me to loosen the nut that holds the crank and then (carefully) ride up a steep hill a few times.

Oh brave!! I think sly already flattened his nuts on the cross bar a few weeks ago , it would be funny if he did it again though..I mean for us, not him!

Hilarious, yes.
Anyway, good news is that using a different extractor, with a small square nut in the hole, the crank came out fine. My extractor is clearly crap. New tools are rubbish.
Thanks for all the suggestions though, some interesting ones there!
