Another soaking wet ride this morning along with 40 mph winds it felt more like November.
Anyway about 2 years ago I bought a Berghaus Pac Lite Waterproof jacket for about £150, Ive always finished my ride absloutley soaked through when wearing it which I put down to persperation and sweating. On Saturday i decided to wear it out in the rain for a gentle walk just to see if it leaked. I Got home without sweating at all but the jacket was soaking on the inside along with my clothes. The jacket has obviously leaked from day one!!! Anyway it's too late to send it back now so i'm looking to buy a new one to get me through the rest of the British Summer and into winter. Any recomendations?

Chances are you need to re_proof it with a wash in stuff made by Grangers or Nikwax, it stops the outer wetting through, costs about £6. When I was in the mountain rescue team I used a Berghaus, kept it proofed and it kept all water out and still does 10 years on! Try that before you spend on a new jacket, if a seam is leaking it wont work but chances are it will, I proof mine each time it's washed. You can get the wash stuff too which keeps them good. Go to an outdoors/hiking shop and they will sort you out.

The jacket has been through the wash a few times, would that possible affect it. Also does the waterproofer you mention affect the breathability of the garment and how is it applied? Thanks Simon

Yep, I got some of the wash and reproofing stuff from an outdoors shop (that's not a shop without a roof). I left it on the kitchen top hoping that the wife would see it and think "Ahhh, this is just the stuff Ive been looking for to wash and reproof his waterproof jacket!". It's still sat there. Sometimes I think I'm too subtle for my own good.

Washing them strips the outer proofing in one go, you pour the stuff into a sink with water and wash by hand, it does not effect breathing, Gore-tex still has its waterproof membrane but as soon as the outer layer gets wet the breathability stops and your jacket brethes like a bin bag! Instructions are on the bottle.this is the stuff http://www.fieldandtrek.com/sfile/1/filt...h-In-750859.htm

Sorry, my "yep" was not intended in reply to your breathability question - we were just posting at the same time.

I have a montane too, but it's more wind proof than water proof. Maybe a different model to yours. I'd describe it as water resistant at best. It scrunches up to the size of an apple.

Yep, thats the one, i just sweat too much in a proper water proof (like a Gore jacket)and then i get cold!, have found the montane keeps the worst of it out.

loody god at keeping the wind out, I'll give it that. You would not believe how something so thin could keep you so warm!

Got a Winter training jacket from Foska( IRN BRU design ) never been caught in a downpour , - only have them in Summer when I'm in short sleeves and shorts etc. - but have been out in some rain , anyhow these jackets are very warm water resistant rather than water proof not that cheap at 85 quid , keep the wind out and have breathable panels at the sides as well as good pockets ,one zipped!

All the advice on Goretex (ie Paclite etc) is good - Grangers or Nikwax wash-in proofers are definitely worth a go. Also a top tip is to tumble dry it on a non-hot setting for a while. It makes the fibres on the outer fabric stand up and shed water more readily. Goretex does have its limits though, and in my opinion is not great stuff. It needs to be significantly warmer on the inside of the jacket than the outside to work properly, and also if it's too wet in the outside world then it just won't work as the moisture pushed through the jacket via the breathabillity has nowhere to evaporate to as the atmosphere is already full of moisture. The best garments I have ever used (and I don't work for them!) are made by Paramo. They don't pack up small enough for sticking in a back pocket on a bike, but if you want to stay dry they are the business - in all conditions. Ask anyone who uses Paramo what they think and they'll just tell you to go and buy one!

i would agree with the nikwax suggestion great stuff and work a treat at reproofing jackets, if thats the problem you'll be amazed at the results.
recently bought (with no other options available) a parachute-in-a-sac. wore it in the cold and wet but ended up wetter inside than out, they are like tinfoil on the inside!
can anyone suggest a CHEAP jacket to help keep you warm and possibly dry that is small enough to easily fit in a jersey pocket. something even the parachute in a sac fails miserably at!

I've got an Altura Nevis jacket which I got about 3 years ago from my LBS for about £35 I think.
Does the business in keeping me dry especially in my neck of the woods and it's pretty warm for the winter as well.
Altura stuff is generally pretty reliable in my experience and doesn't cost the earth.
