This is going to sound really clueless but can you mix and match with campag stuff like have some parts chorus, some centaur and some record? Would I be stupid to get a centuar compact crankset with a centaur rear derailleur and a record front derailleur? I'm so confused!

All should work fine together, just don't run a 10 speed on a 9 speed chain, the front and rear derailleurs are merely levers and cams, the control and indexing comes from the shifters. You just have to make sure your front derailleur can cope with the 50/34 teeth range, it will say in the owners manual or on the web its max teeth, usually 15t or 16t but it's commonly known you can go a tooth or two more. If you are already running a compact then don't even worry about it.

It should all be interchangeable. My 9spd winter bike is a mixture of all sorts of groups.

Personally, i would never mix this stuff, as it hardly ever works in the first place! make the move to Shimano and you never have any problems again!

Don't worry about mamba 80, he's been let out for the weekend and has forgotten to take the medication they gave him.

Don't try mixing a Record or Chorus bottom bracket with Centaur, Veloce etc. Or vice versa. I don't think that these are easily compatible.

I think the they are 102mm axles whereas the Centaur and below are 111mm for double chainsets. At least that's what I was told when looking at BB's recently.

Italy! a country famous for....... all things soft an warm... like PASTA! which is what campag use for making their chains! and judging by the amount of broken gears i saw at the Maratona and last weekends Devil ride, they also use it for making the rest of their group sets and wheels.

So the BBs and chainsets aren't always compatible but if i bought an ultratorque compact centuar with the integrated BB and a record compact front derailleur would that be okay?

Cant see why that would be an issue.
Fr Der would be the same shape and size as the Centaur, but just lighter materials here and there, but maybe someone more clevered than wot I am can confirm that...

Any front mech will work, whether Campag or not. They are not groupset specific.

You can even use a stronger rear wheel with a Japanese hub if you know what you're doing.

Okay, so being niave here..... what's so great about Campag?
I have shimano on my bike and have had no problems, unlike the Italian guy in the apartment next to me who had a specialized S-works with campag bit and bobs (technical speak!!) that exploded the day of the race forcing him to stop at about 5km and having a long walk to the nearest mechanical station... who could do nothing to help him

A lot of tradition mainly, until the latest dura ace kit, campag hid all cables under the bar tape, shimano didn't. I use shimano ultegra, sram and FSA all on one bike and it works fine, mixed tiagra,105, ultegra before and when a rear mech got chewed up I put the deore one off my mtn bike on for the week to get by and again no problems.

People like you with your inane replies! stick to your point! As Plymchick said, what exactly is so special with Campag? apart from the price? Perhaps 20 years ago, the big C had the market to its self but no one (i bet they can ) can question the functionality and price of the japanese, and going back to the original question, its inter-changeability.

No 20 years ago there was suntour, which worked fine, mavic which worked better, miche which worked ok, shimano and campagnolo which have always worked well, and Sachs, which has eventually become SRAM
