I have a 9sp Shimano Sora/Tiagra set up on my bike but I'm getting mighty pissed of noise coming from the drivetrain so I'm thinking on upgrading. I was thinking on doing it part by part but if I upgrade to 105 which is 10sp will the likes of the chainset be compatible with everything else or will I have to upgrade to 10sp all together?

No problem, 9speed chainset will work with a 10 speed cassette but you will need to change shifters, cassette and chain to 10 speed all at once. Check your wheels are 10 speed compatable as well! Why not upgrade to an ultegra or dura ace 9 speed, much cheaper and just as good, they are just not the in thing now but good enough for le tour a couple of years ago.

Didn't think the 9sp Ultegra/ Dura Ace would still be available now! Would be convenient swapping 9sp for 9sp right enough, got me thinking now!

I just got this chainset, if you use a compact this one seems good.

It is 9 or 10 speed, I have it and it is very nice, great price as well considering you get the bearings as well, guess what folks, sly gets his today!

Well I hope they still have some come payday next week as I'll be buying one! Right, thats the tick tick taken care of, onto the squeek! Are there any pedal systems similar to the Shimano SPDs that last a decent length of time without sounding like I have a vermin infestation inside me bike? I really find the SPDs ideal for commuting but they don't seem to last any time, should I look to buy something higher up the Shimano quality scales or do I swap for something better (Look?) and put up with the slightly more awkward clip in system?

A touch of chain lube on the cleats should stop the squeek if it's between the shoe and pedal, If it is the pedal bearings that are noisy get this... http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=SHIMTOOL750000000000
And a bit of grease, cheaper than new pedals. I use Look keo pedals and have their version of the tool to keep them in tip top condition. It is amazing how many think pedal bearings don't need care!

Had an anoying squeek in the pedal area ,like bfergie said chain lube on the cleats.Still squeekin' when the chainset was off for a good clean up held the pedals(Campag.Chorus ) in a carpenters vice(wooden jaws)an placed a couple of drops of chain lube(White Litning)at the axle ends to run down in -- PEACE !PERFECT PEACE!

Would you believe my LBS told me that you couldn't get a tool to service the bearings in Shimano pedals, you just chuck them when they are done! Won't mention the name of the shop, suffice to say they share their name with a Scottish city and a supermarket!!!

Oh I believe it, I spoke to my bike shop about the Look Keo recall, they knew nothing. If something is built by someone, it usually can be taken apart and fixed by someone else. I would give the tool a shot, you're from Aberdeen so your stingyness is legend even in the rest of Scotland..but reality is why waste perfectly good kit, things are costly enough!

Hello Scot Land!!!
(Sorry the Eurovision thing kicks off sometimes, I may be drunk)
My 14 year old SPDs are going fine, its not just Scots who are tight(or broke). I changed the cleats at the beginning of the year and they stopped making any noise, I have occasionally sprayed WD40 at them, but that's all the maintenance they get.
Possibly not much help.
