Just a couple questions....
      #31217 - 19/08/2008 11:11

I started training one month ago, and have managed to build up to riding for 2-3 hours straight.

I'm 15 and have grown up around cycling so I feel like I should know this but what food is best to take with me when i'm out on rides that long?
At the moment I take a couple of 'go ready' bars with me but then i've got other people telling me to take gels out.
Which is best?

and what kind of foods should I be eating to keep up my energy when i'm off the bike? As since i've started training i'm either ALWAYS hungry or have absolutely no energy left.

Also,
i'm going out everyday and I know my Dad used to take one day off a week but I love just being on my bike and haven't had a single day off it since July - is that a good thing to do or should I do the same as my Dad and take a day off?

I'd be grateful for any help or advice you give - and sorry if i'm asking dumb or naiive questions

Gels are a good energy boost but they don't last, the bars are better but anything with oats like flapjacks are good, malt loaf and bananas are great as well plus they take the feeling of hunger away. Make sure you are eating well before you go out on the bike, complex carbs(porridge, wholmeal bread, rice, pasta)
If training hard put a carb/electrolyte solution in your bottle also, and please take a day off the bike, even if you mix cycling with other training like light weight training, rowing, running or swimming, they will put other muscles into use which will make you a better cyclist.

As for always being hungry and no energy the best thing to do is work out how many calories you are using each day and make sure you are replacing them plus make sure you have plenty calcium and protein at your age!

Don't ever worry about questions being silly, this one is a very valid one and it's great to see younger folk interested in the sport. Keep going but take some rest, you will find the next day you will feel much stronger!

I usually stuff a handful of Gels in the back pocket and these do seem to provide a boost when needed. I can't afford to buy energy bars as well, so I just take a banana, some ginger nut biccies, small packet of sweets, oaty cereal bars and loads of High5 drink. You could also stop at cycling friendly cafes en route.

Then I try to eat within 30 mins of getting home. I have a glass of milk with brown sugar in and then a meal or a big snack.

I don't get to ride everyday, but I have heard that rest days are extrememly important. Know it all has already mentioned doing other activities on your day(s) off, and he seems to know what he's talking about most of the time (annoyingly, on occasions...)

Anyway, lucky you getting to ride all the time - sounds great!

Thanks for the advice, before I went out today I have a big bowl of pasta and I still feel energetic now i'm off,
and I'll make a point of choosing a day when I either go out for a small amount of time or just don't touch the bike because my legs are killing today.

thanks
