Another gold for GB. Fantastic...I think.
Part of me is kind of jealous of the disproportionate media attention that perhaps it will draw away from the cycling squads achievements. I know that's wrong, but there you go. Part of me is also a bit uncomfortable about her history. I just don't believe in her. Still, at least we're well ahead of the Aussies in the medal table.

Must have my head in the sand as I've no idea about her history! Still at least thats athletics off the mark with a medal.....well worth their £26 million in lottery funding!

She missed three drugs tests, was banned for a year by British Athletics, and banned for life by the British Olympics body. The ban was overturned on appeal.

Can I say in regards to Christine, firstly good achievement to win gold. However, must say that if my fave ever athlete and hero Cathy Freeman had been running, she won have beat that entire field by half a second. Anyway onto my main point, christine did a ras-mus and missed three tests in a year. She was banned for a year and not allowed to take part in the games until she won the worlds and was subsequentley re-instated, probably on the basis that she could medal. The British press were mixed when she won the worlds and I'm sure that she will be splashed about all over the papers tomorrow. However, dwain chambers, also committed a drug offense, albeit his situation was less tolerable than Christines, and dwains made to feel like a leper. He served his ban, came back, was the best british athlete and was denied his chance. Could this be because the authorites knew he had no chance of medalling or were they just making a stance. I'm not saying that dwain should have competed and i feel he should have had a life ban, as all dopers should have. It just seems as though the rules are being made to suit?

Christine whatshername didn't actually fail a test, although missing three does raise the eyebrows. Chambers did, and like Millar his Olympic career ended immediately because of it.

That's right Joe, and I think that is the important difference between the two, although three missed tests is tantamount to a positive. However, her being world champion probably helped her case.

I might have been a bit hasty. The Beeb have just done a great review of the cycling team's success, to the theme of The Magnificent Seven.
Shanaze Reade is still to compete in the BMX as well.

A great shame Reade wasn't able to be on the track, we could well have had a one/two in the ladies sprint as well as the mens!

In my opinion the Olympics are right to permenantly ban alhletes with a shady history so christine whateverhernameis, david millar and chambers should all be banned from competing but after serving their bans they should be allowed to compete in any other event. For what it's worth I think Christine Ohuroguru was a cheat even if she isn't now and I'm not glad she's won.

Yes you are ! The suspicion is that they both cheated and in order to avoid being caught they missed the test. Ferdinand served a lenghty ban.

But wasn't Christine in another country when she was called for hers and therefore didn't know they were happening (which is why she only got a year ban), whereas Rio was just too arrogant to attend his?

Christine Ohuruogo and Mike Rasmassun committed the same offence.
If you don't provide a test to a policeman when asked you get banned from driving. If you don't give a sample to a tester you should get banned from racing. The logic's the same.
Whether you agree with that is up to you.

Christine O missed three tests, Ferdinand only one. And the eight month ban cost him a place in the squad for the 2004 Euro Championships.

3 missed tests = 1 positive. As far as I'm concerned she should be banned from all sports for life. And that goes for anyone, of any nationality, in any sport. If we don't operate a No Tolerance policy we'll never be rid of the cheats.

But he's back playing now. Both were punished according to the decisions made by the "People with the Power" and they know a lot more than we do about each individual's situation. Both were "suspected cheats" and served their punishments. I don't claim to know all the rules and regulations for competing in the Olympics, but she obviously fell into these or she would not have been there.

I'm not certain she was in another country. I recall hearing about a journalist who attempted to make the journey across London (or maybe another town/city) in the time that she claimed was impossible to make for one of the tests, and he made it in plenty of time. On the other side, there's a lot of info to suggest that the newish procedures for being exactly where you said you'd be were complex and many, many British athletes were missing tests. She just happened to miss 3. And almost a forth: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/gener...est-760694.html

Interesting reading. Even the IAAF states that missing 3 tests does not mean she was doping and I assume she passed the following one(s)seeing as she was at the Olympics. From that article, it would appear that they need to look at their procedures after Dave Collins, of UK Athletics, announced that around 70 British athletes had missed one out-of-competition doping test since the new regulations were adopted, and four had missed two tests. Or shall we just judge them all as cheats?!!!
