You are best off taking the forks to your LBS to get the old crown race rempved and the new one hemmered on, other than that the job is easy as everything fits by hand. Smear a bit of grease on the tapered edge of the bearings so that if any play develops during use the steel bearing cartridge will not grind material from the alu or carbon frame.

Yup the crown race can be tricky especially on a carbon steerer, Fitting the new race is slightly easier if heated to expand it but this can only be done on an alu/alloy steerer. For removing the old crown race I use a very thin old knive that I gently tap in between the bottom of the race and fork, work right round the steerer then repeat with something like a dinner knife(slightly thicker) you don't need to hit hard, gentle taps are ample, keep repeating until the crown race pops off.
To fit a new one I put the race on as far as it will go then I slide on an old headset bearing followed by a tube of metal longer than the steerer and only a fraction wider, sit down with the forks sitting on your foot and gripped with your legs then tap the metal tube, you need to use some force but the use of the tube makes sure the race goes on square and with no part of the fork on a solid surface you wont break anything. It's not that hard a job but you have to be brave!

Just had a thought , we have in the mill (textiles) where I work a tool for removing cog wheels that have siezed on to spindles. Difficult to describe ,it has three arms with a hook on the end of each, a large threaded rod through the middle. The arm hooks go behind the wheel(crown race)the rod on the spindle(steerer)with a piece of wood to prevent any damage then turn thr screw ,same idea as a crankset remover. Will see if I can pinch er borrow it sometime and try with an old set of forks!

Sounds like a gear puller, if so it probably wont be fine enough to hook over the back of the crown race, you only have to get the race to move 2mm before it pops off.

Deposit an applicable amount of unmarked banknotes to my Swiss bank account or I will tell Mrs bfergie where the family silver has been disappearing to
