I am planning to ride this years stage 17 next summer over three, four or five days. Depending on fitness I am looking at June or Sept - mainly to avoid 2009 TDF and summer holidays so accommadation and roads will be as quiet as possible. On a skiing holiday last winter I had a days visit to Valloire - an epic journey by car that fuelled desire to get on bike and ride. The road stopped at Valloire because the Galibier was snowed in. I am assuming the pass will be open June and September. If anybody has any experience of this region I would appreciate your views on my June or September plan. (note. will have following car and stop on route over how many days it takes to complete).

It doesn't take long for the weather to get colder in the alps and in September it does get quite cold. If the weather is overcast i wouldn't recommend going to the top of any cols, very cold on the descent. It is manageable over 2 days easily, I climbed the Croix de Fer/ Glandon and Alpe D'Huez last week and if taken at a reasonable rate they are very manageable, have no fear about equipping a triple chainset or a 32 with a compact it is worth it for the reduced effort. I would suggest an easier col on the first day near Bourg D'oisans. Have fun!

Thanks for the reply - looks like June is the best month to go.
