carbon seat stays vs carbon rear triangle vs full alu?
      #31974 - 26/08/2008 17:58

as a fairly novice cyclist would I notice the difference between the three options over roughly 30-40 miles on country lanes?
I am looking for a new bike and can't afford the full carbon options, so I was wondering whether to get a full alu bike with better gear(with the possibilty of upgrading to a carbon seat post) spec over one that is a carbon/alu mix but with slightly worse spec?
cheers for any help.

Don't worry about the carbon seat post, you really wont tell much difference between it and alu/alloy, Carbon forks are the main improvement in comfort, I use alu/alloy wth carbon forks and carbon rear stays and find it smoother and more lively on the road than my full alu/alloy frame, I would go for the best frame, the groupset can be changed in time if you need to in time. Can you provide a link for each of your options so a proper opinion can be made since some high end alu/alloy frames are fantastic! There is rarely much in weight difference!

Yes..I don't know how to buy an expensive one without being murdered by the one in the house!! I have to build them bit by bit! I also fix bikes locally on wet days for extra earnings...great with lady shoppers....and their bikes!

actually having just gotten my second titanium bike i can attest to the fact that IMO and experience, the geometry has a lot more to do with a frames comfort than what its made of.

the serotta has much more relaxed angles and a longer wheel base and the difference is very noticeable over my litespeed.

however the difference between my litespeed and my old cannondale alu frame really wasn`t all that big.

go figure

Contrary to the technical God, I DID notice a big improvement fitting a carbon post after an alloy one. Much improved bump handling properties. However, I guess I may have had a cheap alloy post, so I might have noticed less difference had it been a highr quality post to start with.

Never used anything other than carbon forks so cannot comment on that, but I will be having a carbon rear triangle on new bike, so I'll be interested to see how that compares to the full alu frame experience.

Then you broke it sly! Common problem, not with the seat posts but the person armed with the allen key!

Yes, I broke it. Now I have a carbon post with alloy top so even I cannot break it!

Ive gotta say that alu with a carbon seatpost is a noticeable difference for me. I was crippled after an hour on my alu training bike even with a carbon addict fork prior to fitting the pro vibe carbon beauty. Now i can ride all day long without hurting my very dodgey back!
