Postcard from Majorca

Iberostar Hotel, Playa de Muro

For all of the planning and preparation that is now commonplace in modern cycling, it is still a rare occurrence for teams to all stay in the same hotel as one another during a race.

Riders can easily be spread around a region - more often than not in hotels of varying quality - at events, but at the Challenge Majorca series, this is indeed the case.

The four-day race is in a select club alongside the Tours of Qatar, Oman and Down Under, with all personnel working on the event also based in the central hub.

Futhermore, the Iberostar Playa de Muro is still open to the public for the duration of the race, giving cycling enthusiasts and autograph hunters the chance to indulge their hobbies.

Equally as impressive is that, through the ever-expanding cycling holidays range it offers, the hotel can confidently say you have a chance to train both like and with the professionals.

Situated near Alcudia, the resort is attracting an increasing number of British riders. For example, Madison-Genesis, stayed on to hold its first training camp there after racing in Challenge Majorca.

Lotto-Belisol, Lampre-Merida, Katusha, Orica-GreenEdge and Team IAM have all previously based themselves there to prepare for a season of competition, too.

The professionals don't have to worry about the costs of transporting bikes to the hotel, and amateurs don't either.

Available for hire at the hotel are Ultegra-equipped carbon race bikes, in a varying range of sizes. You don't even need to bring your pedals - that's catered for too.

Up to 2,000 bikes are on site and ready to be rented. Cyclists amount to one in three of the hotel's guests, and between 85 and 90 per cent of those arrive without their bike.

The hotel boasts the biggest Jacuzzi in Majorca as well as ice baths, a 50-metre indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room. A larger, outdoor pool is available, too.

From February 2014, Iberostar are hopeful of having a direct partnership with budget airline Jet2com to enable more British riders to head out to the resort for a week or so.

Sounds expensive? At this time of year, it isn't. Prices per night start around £25 for bed and breakfast.

Majorca's roads are begging to be ridden by cyclists. Few places are better equipped to welcome them when they return from their rides.

With everything from on-site mechanics to a bike wash area, the hotel is well equipped to cater for cyclists' needs.
