It’s that time of year where everybody is making resolutions. Lose weight, give up drinking, train harder, you know the score – but our resolution is to not make any new year’s resolutions.

The problem with any fitness purge is that there’s always a tendency to overdo things, which can do a lot more harm than good. Our best advice is – don’t panic.

That’s the theme of this issue’s fitness feature. January is such a dark, dank month that psychologically it’s a difficult time for any fitness purge. What’s the point of going berserk in the first few weeks only to be burnt out by the beginning of February?

Massive mileage on icy roads also isn’t a great idea if you want to stay injury and illness-free.

At least we’re not battling through snowdrifts as we were this time last year. That taught me to be patient, to avoid that annual ‘big comeback’.

Now I ride when I can and if the weather is too bad, then I don’t get hung up about it. At the time of writing, the weekend had been coldest of the winter and with sleet showers thrown in for added misery, I gave riding a miss.

Instead, I waited four days and then with the temperature a full 10 degrees warmer, I had an enjoyable couple of hours around the lanes and didn’t even need my gloves.
