You’ll find everything you ever wanted to know about sportive riding and more in this week’s 32-page pull-out guide. Whatever your ability, there’s essential advice to help you get the most from your big day.

You name it, we’ve got it covered: choosing your event, training plans and advice, best bikes, packing your kit bag, how to improve your climbing and descending, pre-event preparation, plus nutrition advice.

Perfect timing then for the latest round of the Cycling Weekly sportive series sponsored by Boardman Bikes at Plumpton in East Sussex on Saturday. There’s a choice of three routes, 74, 57 or 33 miles, with this rider needing to opt for the short route having failed to find time for any training in preparation for his first event of the season. Despite my complete lack of fitness, I’m expecting a grand day out on the quiet lanes in the rolling Sussex countryside.

If you’re up for more of a challenge, the 74-mile route has more than 3,000 feet of climbing and the standard route boasts 1,600 feet of elevation gain. All three rides start and finish at Plumpton race course, with registration opening at 7.30am.
