Gale-force winds battered the country last weekend, leading to generally slow times in most time trials.

Just two riders – Wiggins and Hutchinson – went under the 20-minute mark in the National 10 on a normally fast course in North Yorkshire, but riders across the country contended with swirling winds.

Nick Dwyer rode superbly to set a new event record time of 19-37 in the Southern Counties CU 10 at Horsham on Saturday, good enough to win by 41 seconds.

Chippenham and District Wheelers’ Jeff Jones did well to clock 20-27 for the U7B course at Falfield, winning by 30 seconds from Bynea CC rider Keiron Davies, while in Oxfordshire Jon Simpkins (Drag2Zero.com) was the only man to go under the 21-minute mark on an exposed and blustery Witney bypass.

Opting not to ride the National Championships, former British Best-All Rounder Kevin Dawson (Sportscover.com) showed he is still a classy rider with victory in the Sheffrec CC event in South Yorkshire, clocking 20–43 for the O10/1 course at Hatfield Woodhouse.

And spare a thought for riders in longer distance events.

Kevin Tye (Datateam Allstars) won the San Fairy Ann CC 50-mile event on the Q50/11 at Lydd, Kent, his time of 1-49-04 being 1-47 quicker than his nearest rival.

And up in Cambridgeshire, Peter Balls (West Suffolk Wheelers) was quickest in the Eastern Counties CA 50 at Six Mile Bottom, clocking 1-51-17 for the exposed course to win by just over a minute.
