Number 17: Ben Swift
Last year’s position: 8
Ben Swift gave Team Sky their first general classification victory of the season when he won the Tour of Picardie in northern France.
The 23-year-old from Yorkshire concentrated on the track until after the World Championships. Swift slotted into the team pursuit squad alongside Steven Burke, Ed Clancy and Andy Tennant. Although they were pipped in the final by the Australians, they still recorded a time of 3-55, which shows just what potential there is the line-up.
On the road, Swift had a patchy season but that victory at the Tour of Picardie confirmed his calibre. He kicked off the three-day stage race with a second place behind Kenny Van Hummel, then went one better by winning on day two. That meant he had to be alert on the final day to clinch the win. He was ninth in the sprint after some fine work from Team Sky.
He also had a string of top ten results – coming very close to a stage win in the Tour of Austria, when he was beaten by Andre Greipel.
