Fabian Cancellara signs with Trek team for 2014

Fabian Cancellara has signed a three-year contract to ride for the new Trek WorldTour team, starting from the 2014 season.

The Swiss 2013 Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix champion is the first high-profile signing for the team after Trek bought the RadioShack-Leopard squad's WorldTour licence for 2014.

"There was a lot of speculation around my professional future in the last couple of weeks - even months," Cancellara said in a statement issued by Trek. "That's why I'm really happy to confirm that I will stay with the Trek family."

"This is a big opportunity for me as a bike rider and it will allow me to develop even more on the sporting side. Because that's what I'm in for: winning bike races, not sitting out until I retire."

The Trek statement also confirmed that the team is actively looking for partners and sponsors for the squad. Cancellara's signing will no doubt help them attract a backer.

The current RadioShack-Leopard squad will continue until the end of the 2013 season.

Cancellara is one of the most reliably successful riders currently in the professional circuit, having won a whole host of Classics, Grand Tour stages, world championship titles and other races in his career
