Fenn's focus pays off with Mallorca wins

Andy Fenn's focus on the road paid off with his first wins as a professional. Yesterday, only one month into his professional career, he won the opening race of the 2012 Challenge Mallorca. He repeated it today by winning Trofeo Migjorn.

Fenn told Cycling Weekly, "I've been solely concentrating on the road."

With the British Cycling Academy or last year while with amateur team An Post he raced on the track. This time last year, he competed in the Beijing World Cup.

"I've been able to start the season later. I was able to focus on the road over the winter, which obviously worked and was the way I wanted to go."

Fenn won Paris-Roubaix in the junior racks four years ago in 2008. Last year, he placed third at the World Championships in Copenhagen and signed to join team OmegaPharma-Quick Step.

With Omega Pharma-QuickStep, he started his season in the Tour Down Under along side experienced team-mates Gert Steegmans and Gerald Ciolek. Steegmans led Tom Boonen to win in the Tour of Qatar while Fenn led the team at the same time in Spain yesterday.

"It is a bit of a surprise as a neo to get this first win," Fenn explained. "I felt a little like I had to win to prove to [the team] I was capable of it. It they rode so well and I didn't win then next time they might be like, 'No, you haven't got it.' So, it was important."

Fenn did it again today, beating Alexander Porsev (Katusha) and Matteo Pelucchi (Europcar).

He would like to find a place in Omega Pharma's classics teams this spring, but admits it will be difficult given the team's depth. Boonen alone has given the team two wins in the Tour of Flanders.

"I'd love to ride in a supporting role. It's possible, but nothing is definite. I'd like to learn from the guys; the more you ride those races the more you can learn."

With the Tour of Sardinia cancelled, Fenn will likely race a smaller race in Italy or Belgium next.
