Giro d'Italia 2013: Stage 2
When: Sunday, May 5
Category: Team time trial
Though it's only 30km from Naples, the volcanic island of Ischia is a rare stop for the Giro d'Italia. Its 34km of coastline road simply doesn't offer enough variety for a road stage.
In 1959, the Giro's only other visit here, it also featured a time trial. Little-known Sicilian Antonino Catalano won the 31km test by 52 seconds over Jacques Anquetil. That was the highlight and one of the few wins of his career.
Tirreno-Adriatico visited once too, when Guido Bontempi won a short time trial.
This year, the Giro runs a team time trial along the northern coast. The road twists more than it undulates, similar to the TTT that started the 2007 Giro in Sardinia.
Though only 17.4km, it will play its part in the GC. Garmin helped set up Ryder Hesjedal for the win last year by taking the Verona time trial. They, along with Sky for Wiggins, will try to do the same this year.
Small islands that thrive on tourism do not get any better than this. Head of the Ischia's town council, Gianluca Trani, said: "After the Pope's visit in 2002, and without trying to draw comparisons, this is another big event for the island."
