GreenEDGE announce first signings

Cameron Meyer, Giro d'Italia 2011, stage 13

New Australian WorldTour team GreenEDGE has announced it is signing Garmin-Cervelo riders Cameron and Travis Meyer and Jack Bobridge.

All three riders came through the Australian Institute of Sport run by Shayne Bannan, the man behind GreenEDGE, it's therefore no surprise that this trio has signed for Australia's new pro team.

Like Team Sky, GreenEDGE is to work closely with the Australian national team, and offer the likes of (Cameron) Meyer and Bobridge a road program perfectly suited to their 2012 Olympic ambitions. Both riders are an integral part of the Australian team pursuit squad and hold several senior world track titles between them.

The signings rob the American Garmin-Cervelo team of three talented young riders, and turns off the supply of talent the team has enjoyed over the years.

Former Sports Director Matt White was key to Garmin's influx of young Australians, bringing them across from the track program and incorporating them in to the European pro road scene. White was sacked by team boss Jonathan Vaughters after this years Tour Down Under (that Cameron Meyer won) for sending a rider to a doctor not authorised to work with the team (that the doctor had previously worked for Lance Armstrong's US Postal team made matters worse).

White was seen as crucial to Garmin's success, but the team has gone from strength to strength this year. They won Paris-Roubaix, held the pink jersey in the Giro d'Italia and had their best ever Tour de France - winning four stages and holding the yellow jersey.

With Thor Hushovd rumoured to be going to BMC this winter, Vaughters may have to reshuffle his team once again. On Twitter today he said, "Regarding transfers: Our takes are better than our gives. But only time will prove that to be true."
