Hugh Wilson wins tough edition of Jock Wadley Memorial road race

Just 17 riders from a field of more than 90 finished the 31st Jock Wadley Memorial in Essex on Sunday, described by organiser Malcolm Hargreaves as the wettest he has promoted.

Victory at the end of the 132km race went to Welshman Hugh Wilson (NFTO) who won a three-up sprint finish in Colchester.

He had been one half of a leading duo alongside Richard Tanguy (UK Youth), and even when Tanguy's team-mate Ian Wilkinson bridged across, they could not stop 25-year-old Wilson from taking the win.

"I had really good legs today," said Wilson. "I got across to a break and nobody seemed to be working, so with seven laps to go I hit them up on the tops. Tanguy came with me and we got away and kept working, but I didn't think we would stay away to be honest."

Elsewhere, Rapha Condor JLT have enjoyed a superb start to the season and Ed Clancy made it even better as he racked up yet another win for the team in the Roy Thame Cup in BUckinghamshire.

The Olympic track gold medallist suffered two punctures on a course laden with potholes, but he was still in the mix come the end of the race.

Clancy showed how good he is in the bunch sprint yet again and had two bike lengths over Richard Lang (Team Raleigh) as he crossed the line. Oliver Rossi of Twenty3C came in third.

The SERRL Summer Series opener on Sunday saw another Rapha Condor winner in 21-year-old Elliott Porter.

Rapha Condor had to settle for second in round two of the CDNW League as Jack Pullar of Madison Genesis powered to first place ahead of their man Richard Handley.

It was an impressive win from Pullar who looked as though he had been swallowed up by the bunch with two laps to go but launched a fantastic attack to pull clear and catch the leaders before grabbing victory.

Another triumph for Madison/Genesis came in race one of the Wolverhampton Wheelers Circuit Race as Liam Holohan and Dominic Jelfs made it a team one-two.

Matt Bottrill is known for his time trialling ability, but the Drag2zero.com rider showed his talent in road racing as he won the first round of the Darley Moor Series in Derbyshire.

And North of the border, Scottish Road Race Champion took another Rapha Condor-JLT victory when he won the Bellahouston Spring Circuit Race near Glasgow. He held off Craig Adams (GJS Racing) for the win.
