Jess Varnish and Becky James scored gold in the women’s team sprint in the opening round of the UCI Track World Cup in Cali, Colombia, on Thursday.
The British duo clocked 33.734 to win the event, with Japan in second spot with 35.391 and home nation Colombia in third.
Kian Emadi came second in the men’s kilometre time trial on his World Cup debut, being beaten only by Fabian Puerta of Colombia. Emadi actually clocked the fastest time of the day on the second of four laps, but faded slightly to be bettered by Puerta in the second half of the race.
Riding as the Welsh Cycling Track Team, Elinor Barker, Ciara Horne and Amy Roberts placed second in the women’s team pursuit behind Giulia Donato, Beatrice Bartelloni and Maria Confalonieri of Italy. The Welsh trio had set the fastest time in qualifying.
Roberts went on to finish ninth in the women’s scratch race.
