£14m promised to improve cycling facilities at stations
The British government has announced the injection of £14 million to improve cycle parking facilities at railway stations across the UK.
Ten 'hubs' will be created at key railway stations across the country at a cost of £5m, with money also to be made available to create an extra 10,000 spaces for bicycles. The scheme should complete within two years.
Stations in York, Sheffield, Grimsby, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Scunthorpe and three London stations will benefit from the new cycle hubs, which will include secure cycle parking, hire facilities and a repair workshop.
The scheme was announced by transport secretary Lord Andrew Adonis, with the idea of encouraging commuters to ditch cars and use their bikes to travel to stations and then catch a train.
"The aim of the programme is to boost the significant number of people cycling to catch their train," said Adonis.
"This will tackle congestion, promote rail travel and help people develop healthier lifestyles and protect the environment."
Money for the project will come from the Department of Transport, Network Rail and Cycling England.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
