21-year-old British rider Adam Yates wins stage and takes over race lead from Rein Taaramae in Presidential Tour of Turkey

Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEdge) has moved into the overall lead in the Presidential Tour of Turkey after a solo move on stage six’s mountain-top finish netted him the victory.

Having started the day in second spot overall behind Rein Taaramae (Cofidis), Yates had to make up the six-second deficit on the Estonian. As Yates pulled away up the road, Taaramae chased furiously to try and cut his advantage – but simply couldn’t catch the British rider and lost the race lead by just a single second.

Davide Formolo (Cannondale) placed second, with Davide Rebellin (CCC Polsat) in third. Taaramae came home in fourth.

For 21-year-old Yates, it’s further proof of his climbing credentials after placing second behind Taaramae on stage three. With just two flat stages remaining in the race, Yates now has a very real chance of taking the overall victory in his first year as a professional.

“I had planned to go around the one kilometre mark,” Yates said after the win. “That’s exactly what I did. There were a couple guys off at that point, and I used them as a springboard. That worked out quite well for me. I passed them all and held everyone off until the end.”

“It hasn’t sunk in yet. We have two more days yet to try to seal up the overall. I guess if it all goes to plan and we take the general classification, it will really mean something after that. For now, I’m happy with the result.”

Coupled with Mark Cavendish‘s three sprint stage wins, British riders have thus far won four of the six stages.

Davide Rebellin, what a cheek. Another guy who should be retired but somehow hangs on with amazing ease…
