Alberto Contador has won his fourth Velo d'Or award after a season in which he recorded nine professional wins, including the general classification at the Vuelta a Espana.

The award is selected by a poll of journalists within cycling, and is organised by the French publication, Velo Magazine.

Contador previously won the award three consecutive times in 2007,2008 and 2009 and while he was tipped to win the award this year, it was confirmed on the release of the November edition of the magazine this week.

Other big wins for the 31-year-old Spaniard in 2014 included the overall at the Tour of the Basque Country and Tirreno-Adriatico as well as taking two stages at the Vuelta.

He finished ahead of compatriot Alejandro Valverde and Tour de France 2014 winner Vincenzo Nibali in the poll for the Velo d'Or, who were voted third and second respectively

The overall top five for the award were:

1. Alberto Contador, 66 pts

2. Vincenzo Nibali, 58 pts

3. Alejandro Valverde, 38 pts

4. Nairo Quintana, 33 pts

5. Michal Kwiatkowski, 30 pts

Contador later tweeted after receiving the prestigious award:
