Alejandro Valverde: "This has been my best season"

Spanish rider says 2014 was the best season of his career, but will not be looking for victory in the Tour de France next year

Alejandro Valverde says 2014 has been the "best season" of his life after taking 11 wins, third place at the Vuelta a Espana and finishing top of the UCI WorldTour rankings.

Victory at La Fleche Wallonne, San Sebastian and a stage at the Vuelta were the Spaniard's biggest wins of the year, but his consistent ability to finish in the top four at races earned him enough points to finish as world number one ahead of compatriot Alberto Contador.
