Alex Dowsett has signed a new three-year deal with Spanish WorldTour team Movistar, taking him through to the end of the 2017 season.

The 25-year-old from Essex was recently in action in the Tour of Britain, where he put in an impressive performance on stage six to take the race lead in what he called his 'hardest day on a bike ever'. During 2014, he took the Commonwealth Games time trial title in Glasgow, and won the time trial stage of the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Dowsett joined Movistar in 2013 after spending two years at Sky. He won the time trial stage of the Giro d'Italia in his debut year for Movistar.

Earlier this year, Dowsett told Cycling Weekly that he was seeking to extend his time at Movistar: "Would I be happy to stay at Movistar? Yeah. I like the team, Movistar is a great place to be and everything they said they’d do when we first set out, they’ve done, they’ve delivered on it on every account."

Dowsett will next be in action in the World Championship elite men's individual time trial on Wednesday in Spain, riding for Great Britain.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
