Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead (Garmin-Cervelo) narrowly missed out on taking her first road World Cup win on Sunday (May 15), coming home in second place behind Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (HTC-Highroad) in the Tour of Chongming Island World Cup round in China.

Teutenberg had won the confusingly similarly-named Tour of Chongming Island UCI 2.1-ranked stage race on Friday, but only after Armitstead had won the sprint on the first of the race’s three stages – the 22-year-old’s first win of the year.

Last year, Armitstead enjoyed her strongest season on the road yet, with stage wins at two of the toughest women’s races. Yorkshire-born Armitstead won a stage of the Tour de l’Aude and three stages of the Tour de l’Ardeche.

Holland’s Annemiek Van Vleuten currently leads the UCI Women’s World Cup overall, just three points ahead of compatriot Marianne Vos, who did not race in China. Highest-placed Brit is Emma Pooley in fifth. Armitstead sits in ninth spot.

Four rounds on the season-long Women’s World Cup remain, with the GP Ciudad de Valladoid taking place in Spain on June 5. Last year’s race was won by Charlotte Becker (Germany).

Armitstead’s Garmin-Cervelo team-mate and fellow Brit Pooley won the opening World Cup round in Italy, but is currently recovering from a broken collarbone sustained during a training ride in April.
