BACKSTEDT SIGNS FOR SLIPSTREAM

Magnus Backstedt has become the latest big name signing for the American Slipstream team. Backstedt joins David Millar, Christian Vande Velde, Julian Dean and David Zabriskie at Jonathan Vaughters' rapidly growing squad.

Backstedt said of the announcement "I feel that it is time for a new start and I am extremely attracted by the programme and values of Team Slipstream-Chipotle."

"Jonathan Vaughters and myself were team mates at Credit Agricole, as soon as I spoke with him regarding the possibility of me joining the team, I knew it was the right decision."

The Slipstream team has gained extra investment for next season although it will wait at least one more year before applying for a ProTour licence. They will however be challenging for a wildcard spot in the Tour de France next year, something many believe they already have, albeit unofficially.

The team is a renowned 'clean' team, with current riders being constantly tested and the results sent straight to WADA for analysis. Another attractive prospect for Tour organisers ASO.

"I believe that with riders such as myself, Millar, Zabriske and VandeVelde joining guys like Danny Pate, we can make a significant impact on some major races next year," Backstedt continued.

"From my own perspective I have a big following in the USA and am really looking forward to getting stuck into races such as the Tour of California and racing for an American team".
