Bellis sixth in Dutch one-day race

Jonny Bellis Revolution 21

Jonathan Bellis (Saxo Bank) came sixth in Sunday's Tour de Rijke in the Netherlands.

The British rider was part of a young Saxo Bank team taking part in the one-day, 196-kilometre race near Rotterdam. Bellis was part of a forty-man lead group that came through to contest the sprint finish.

Kenny van Hummel (Skil-Shimano) won the bunch sprint in Spijkenisse at the end of the UCI 1.1 ranked event.

Twenty-year old Bellis is a product of the Great Britain Olympic Academy programme, having spent his formative years as a successful track rider. He has recently started to get results on the road, where he is quickly finding his feet in bunch finishes.

Bellis joined Saxo Bank in 2008 as a stagiaire when it was known as CSC. After a strong performance in the Tour of Britain, and subsequent races, the Danish-based squad run by former professional Bjarne Riis gave him a full pro contract.

Bellis originally hails from the Isle of Man, home to British sprint star Mark Cavendish, who incidentally was also contesting a sprint finish today...

Former Associate Editor

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
