Black Friday 2016 is coming, so we look forward to what to expect at the end of November

If you’re in need of a new bike, then 25 November is the day to do it. There will be a whole load of Black Friday bike deals to choose from, with huge discounts of 50% off or more being common.

What is Black Friday?

For consumers and retailers in the UK, Black Friday is a recent phenomenon, but it has been going strong the United States for decades.

Black Friday is the first Friday after Thanksgiving (which in 2016 is 25 November), and is traditionally seen as the start of the Christmas shopping season, with high street retailers opening their doors at the crack of dawn and offering big discounts for shoppers who have set their alarm clocks.

The rise of internet shopping has allowed the Black Friday tradition to spread throughout the world, with the UK’s bike retailers like Wiggle, Chain Reaction Cycles, Evans Cycles, and Halfords all getting caught up in the scramble to get shoppers to part with their cash.

Where can I find the best Black Friday bike deals?

All of the big cycling retailers will be offering huge discounts on bikes, especially as the day comes towards the end of the year when they are trying to get rid of their 2016 stock in order to make space in their warehouses for 2017 bikes, perhaps equipped with the new Shimano Dura-Ace groupset.

Of all the big names, Evans Cycles probably has the best range manufacturers from which to pick the best Black Friday bike deals, with bikes from road bikes from BMC, Specialized, Trek, Bianchi, Fuji, and Pinnacle all being on the company’s books. Plus, there’s always the option to pop into a bricks and mortar store too.

Wiggle and Chain Reaction Cycles are also sure to offer some pretty tasty Black Friday bike deals.

The best Black Friday bike deals at Wiggle are likely to be found on Eastway bikes, which are produced by Wiggle, thus giving the company the ability to fully control the price. Also likely to be offered at a good discount are bikes from Felt, De Rosa, Eddy Merckx, GT, and Colnago, with a number of models from each company available to buy online.

The pick of the Chain Reaction Black Friday deals are likely to be on Vitus bikes, which (as with Castaway with Wiggle) are owned and produced by Chain Reaction. The Northern Irish company also stocks bikes from Cube, Fuji, Ghost, and Raleigh, so expect to see discounts on those too.

If you’re after a cheaper road bike or a hybrid bike, then it might be worth seeing what Halfords has on offer. Alongside deals on camping gas and windscreen washer fluid, the Halford should be offering big discounts on Carrera and Boardman entry-level road bikes and hybrid bikes, which are great if you’re just starting to get into cycling.

Of course the other option is to shop local. A lot of local bike shops will be getting into the spirit of things with discounts of their own, and although these Black Friday bike deals might not always be at the levels on offer by the big online retailers, it does give you the opportunity to support a local business, and you can always rely on excellent customer service and on-hand mechanics that you won’t get from anything on the other side of a computer screen.

When will these Black Friday bike deals be available?

Different retailers take different approaches to what is the busiest shopping day of the year, so Black Friday bike deals won’t necessarily become available at 00:01 on 25 November.

Wiggle already has a page on its website that includes a countdown to Black Friday, with the retailer kicking off its deals at midnight on Black Friday in previous years, then continuing them through the weekend, before bringing out some fresh bargains for Cyber Monday three days later.

In contrast Chain Reaction unleashed some of its Black Friday bike deals four weeks before the day itself. The deals were then updated each week leading up to the release of some of the biggest discounts on Black Friday itself. So maybe we should stay tuned from the last week of October for some of Chain Reaction Cycles’ best Black Friday bike deals.

You should also check out Fatbirds they’re smashing it! I was just checking out the newsletter. They’ve got a minimum of 15% off all bikes, Min 20% off lights and tools, up to 70% off helmets and locks, up to 50% off pedals and loads more. I’m not sure what’s going on there but they’ve gone mental!

  • Some of these deals aren’t as good as they look at first glance. The Ultegra groupset has been available for similar amounts throughout the year. Next we’ll have a deal for 105 at just under £300, oh but wait, that’s not new either. So to say Ultegra is £999.99 is stretching it a bit. When it first came out it was probably closer to that price, but it’s been cheaper for most of the year! Don’t get sucked in!
