Cycling Weekly went along to Eurobike, the world’s biggest cycle trade show, to bring you news of what’s hot for 2012 and beyond…

Fat is the new fast if you look around at what’s happening in the wheel sector.

Two big players launched new wheels at the show. Zipp, once again the aero trendsetter, has applied its wide Firecrest rim shape to its superlight all-rounder, the 303, further increasing its desirability. Bontrager’s new line up of D3 Aeolus wheels, clincher and tubular ranging from 30-90mm, are equally podgy.

They look the business and with impressive wind tunnel results they are likely to be the step up it needed to be right back in the game.

Mavic and Lightweight were brands showing off new stuff still at the prototype stage. Mavic’s CC80 we saw used at Le Tour with an ingenious tyre wall fairing, but the Lightweight is hot off the press. With a new rim profile, completely new hub design and fewer spokes, it looks like Lightweight has, at last, started focusing more on aerodynamics.

We’ve talked about both the Enve/Smart tie-up and 3T’s new approach before, but Eurobike was the first time we got our hands on full production versions.
