Bradley Wiggins signs new contract at Team Sky

Sir Bradley Wiggins extends his stay at Team Sky until April 2015, after which he will concentrate on the Rio 2016 Olympics

Sir Bradley Wiggins has signed a new short-term contract with Team Sky, keeping him at the British team until April this year.

The deal will allow the 2014 World Time Trial Champion to compete at Paris-Roubaix in Sky colours, but rules out the possibility of him racing at the Giro d’Italia.

Wiggins, who became the first British winner of the Tour de France in 2012, will then leave Sky to focus on his preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympics, most likely joining the new team he helped set up last year.

“Paris-Roubaix is a special race for me and I’m determined to give it another go in Team Sky colours,” Wiggins said. “It’s one of the toughest races in the calendar and my aim is to improve on my ninth-place finish last year. After that I can focus fully on preparing for the Rio Olympics in 2016.”

After attempting to win the Hell of the North, where he finished ninth last year, Wiggins will likely take a shot at the Hour Record over the summer.

At the end of 2014, Cycling Weekly revealed details of ‘Team Wiggins’, including a list of riders signed up to the project and an exclusive look at the team’s new kit.
