British team ready for Junior World Track Championships

Great Britain are sending a compact squad of five sprinters to the Junior World Track Championships (August 11-15) in Moscow.

The riders are Rebecca James, Kevin Stewart, Kian Emadi, Callum Skinner and Lewis Oliva. They will be guided by ODP sprint coach James Norfolk.

There are no British entrants for Friday's time-trial and Sunday's road race.

ODP performance manager Helen Mortimer explained: "There's just a few riders going out for this one; our big hope for the year was the European track championships in Minsk, where the riders did a sterling job."

The event, which finished just over two weeks ago, saw Great Britain finish with a medal haul of six golds, seven silvers and seven bronzes.

Mortimer highlighted that the emphasis for Moscow is on gaining experience at this level of competition rather than winning medals: "It's a small team and three of the four guys are first-year juniors."

"It's another international experience which are few and far between, particularly for the sprinters. This is a whole new thing to learn, and we're just looking for them to perform within what we expect of them."

However, with recently-crowned double European gold medallist James on board, there could be more medals for Team GB to celebrate.
