The British women?s team pursuit trio won gold at the Melbourne world cup earlier today, adding to their victory in Manchester at the beginning of the month.
Joanna Rowsell, Lizzie Armitstead and Katie Colclough narrowly edged out the Australian team in qualifying with a time of 3:31.578 minutes for the three kilometre event. They then backed up in the final to go two seconds quicker and snatch the gold by just over half a seoncd.
It was another fine performance by the girls after Rowsell had won the individual pursuit and Armitstead the scratch race on the first day of the event. Armitstead then crashed out of the points race, but recovered well enough to help the British team take their third gold medal.
The result sees the British team's incredible run of wins in pursuiting events, both individual and team, continue. The performances of Britain's young female rides also means that Olympic medallists Rebecca Romero and Wendy Houvenaghel won't be able to just walk back in to the pursuit team for the world championships in March.
The Australian team won the overall classification of the second world cup of the winter long series, but three golds for the British team was another fine performance seeing as they only took three riders.
After securing many of the world championships qualification points they needed at the Manchester world cup, the majority of the British track riders are now taking a short break before building back up for the Copenhagen world cup and the world championships at the end of March.
The British sprinters spent this week in Majorca doing some base miles, while Chris Hoy is currently on holiday.
The next round of the track world cup is in Cali, Columbia from December 11 ? 13. Although the British team is yet to be confirmed, Armitstead and Colclough are expected to be joined by Alex Greenfiled and Lucy Martin, as the girls on the Olympic Academy continue their winter campaign. Rob Hayles and Peter Kennaugh may also travel to South America to ride the Madison.
A slightly bigger team is expected to travel to Beijing for the world cup in January, with an even stronger team heading to Ballerup, near Copenhagen for the fifth and final round.
