Campagnolo has announced an initiative called Revolution 11 which apart from smart new logos encompasses changes across the full range of 11-speed components with the aim of reducing weight and improving shift performance.


A nice quiet rest day of the Tour de France is a perfect opportunity for the Italian gods of componentry to whip up a bit of hoopla about their forthcoming 2011 changes.



And if we thought they might be taking their own rest break after just two years of the current 11-speed components and the recently-announced changes to Veloce and Centaur we were very wrong.



There is so much detail to the changes in all four groupsets Super Record, Record, Chorus and Athena that we’ll be publishing separate articles about each over the next few hours but in the meantime the across-the-board key highlights are:



● Completely redesigned shifters, gear mechs, chainrings and sprocket tooth profiles under the ‘Ultra Shift’ banner for better changes.



● And those changes can now be made faster. You can upshift 5 sprockets at a time or downshift 3.



● General weight reduction, for example all rear gear main bolts are now aluminium.



● The option of a dual-pivot brake at the rear on all four groups.

● Despite even wider use of stealthy black carbon-fibre, there is a classic shiny-aluminium version of Athena for old-school purists.

● Option of red or white Ergopower hoods in a new comfier compound. Apart from black, obviously, with cables to match.



● New lighter brake shoes with a redesigned retention mechanism and new brake compound.

Campagnolo’s top rear gear mechanism now more or less all carbon-fibre, at 155g shaving almost 20g from the 2009 model it will replace.
