Number 20: Laura Trott’s individual pursuit in the European Championship omnium

October

Laura Trott had already enjoyed a more than decent opening day to the omnium competition at the track European Championships in Apeldoorn.

She was lying in third place after day one, having ridden a tactically astute race to win the elimination.

But it was her performance in the individual pursuit that caught the eye.

Having smashed her personal best for the discipline at the National Championships earlier in the month (with a 3-30), she turned in a 3-36 to beat Tatsiana Sharakova of Belarus into second place.

While the time might not appear earth-shattering, it’s worth remembering that the Apeldoorn track is sluggish and that at the World Championships on the same track it would have been enough for a bronze medal ride.

And it catapulted her into first place in the omnium standings and set her up to win a European champion’s blue jersey with gold stars.
