Number 23: Ian Stannard hauls himself to fourth place at Paris-Tours

October

There are some bike riders who make your legs ache just watching them ride. If we’re honest about it, Ian Stannard is not going to win many points for his riding style but the way he just keeps going reminds you of the Terminator.

Paris-Tours in October was one of those days when he just put it in the big gear, ignored the pain and ploughed on.

It nearly got him a place on the podium too, but he just left himself too much to do.

One minute he’d missed the split, the next he’d dragged himself back up to the front again, only to find that Greg Van Avermaet, the eventual winner, had slipped away.

Even in the finishing straight, with victory out of his grasp, Stannard was turning himself inside out hoping to get second or third.

We’re willing to bet there’s a very big win just around the corner for Stannard in 2012.
