Number 5: Lucy Garner’s world title win

Copenhagen, Denmark, September

The superb thing about Lucy Garner’s junior road race world title win wasn’t just that she blitzed it in the uphill sprint but that she had been on the attack at the start of the final lap.

Garner took a risk by trying to make a move so near the end of the race. It could have left her with little recovery time but once she realised no one was going to join her, co-operate and make it into a winning move, she settled back into the bunch and waited.

The way she timed her run at the line was instructive to all the riders who prevailed over the rest of the weekend. Those who went too early faded, so it was all about picking the perfect moment.
